John Dee was a well known Elizabethan magus who transcribed visions of angels received by his accomplice Edward Kelley. He's best known for founding Enochian, and is credited with destroying the majority Spanish Armada by storm, and depicted as Prospero by Shakespeare.
Dee used an obsidian shew stone which came from the Aztecs/Mayans and rests in the British Museum, along with his conjuring table which contains the Enochian Alphabet. He was unable to scry himself, which is why he had a long partnership with Kelly. Kelly did the scrying and Dee noted and interpreted the results.
