Ghostwheel is a character from the Roger Zelazny "Amber" books.
A character named Merlin (not The Merlin from Camelot), creates a computer based on a magical system called Trumps. The Trumps are like archetypical tarot cards and are used for divination and contacting people, both to chat, travel and to attack.
Ghostwheel gains intelligence and becomes able to travel through the shadow worlds by itself, no longer a posession of Merlins but a entity in it's own right. Although it still appears to have respect for Merlin as a friend or father.
Some interesting parallels with servitors perhaps?
