Hermes Trismegistus, or Hermes the thrice-great, was the Greek name for the Egyptian god Thoth. The Hermetica, a series of alchemical, magical, and gnostic tests, was attributed to his authorship. This implies that at least one, if not more, writers assumed the name. He coined the axiom "As above, so below" to describe the microcosm and macrocosm that were represented by man and the universe.
