An avatar is the term used to denote the incarnation of a Hindu god/goddess (avatars are particularly associated with Vishnu) into human or theriomorphic form. Avatars may appear human, for example, but they are not bound by the limitations placed on human beings. Avatars are said to manifest in order to effect a particular divine purpose.
