Yume Nikki (Dream Diary) is a free Japanese game created in 2004 using RPG Maker 2003. The game and its soundtrack were created by someone under the name Kikiyama[1].

The game is notable for its bizarre and sometimes unsettling content and themes. Though nothing has ever been confirmed, there are several theories about what exactly is going on.

In the game, you play as a girl named Madotsuki. When you start in her apartment, the only things you can do are save, sleep, and play a minigame on her game console. When you go to sleep, you wake up in an alternate version of her apartment environment, which you can then exit. Going out of the door, you find yourself in a room with several doors, each one leading to a different dream area. The object of the game is to collect all of the "effects" from the dream worlds, which give Madotsuki certain powers (some of which are used to get other effects). In the dream world, you can interact with certain things, use effects, and wake yourself up. Some events, creatures, and objects will force you to wake up if encountered, either by just waking you up or teleporting you to a closed off area. When you've collected all of the effects, you take them back to the door room, drop them all on the floor, and then wake up and go out to Madotsuki's balcony to see the game's ending.
