Dhyana is often translated as 'meditation' or 'meditative-absorption'.

"Controlling the affliction of senses by the mind, contemplation by the inner being of the chosen deity is called dhyana".
The Kulanarva Tantra

Gaining the skills of Dhyana is a primary requirement of Tantric practice. There are numerous Dhyanas that require the sadhaka to be skilled in the intense visualisation of what are often complex images - of gods/goddesses, yantras, etc. Like many other tantric techniques, Dhyana reinforces the understanding that the worshipper and the object of worship are essentially, one.
